Welcome to the Learning English Through Literature Blog!

This is a space for you to exchange ideas, opinions and feelings about the books we are looking at and the ones you have chosen to present, perhaps even recommend some new ones.

As we only have bi-weekly classes this is an ideal place to meet and to relate your reading experiences between classes. Hopefully the posts here will also add to the richness of the discussions in class and provide a jumping off point for areas of discussion we might otherwise have overlooked.

Basically, the more you post, the more useful the blog.

So get writing!

Oliver

Hi all,

As promised, here is the link to the full interview with Moshin Hamid about his book. Listen, if you can - it's very enlightening.

Okay, see you on Friday for what I think is our last class before Christmas... So make sure you don't forget the presents!

Take care,

Oliver

  1. Hi everyone!
I hope this arrive at time and in a proper way! I've been looking for the way to make a post at least an hour ago :(

Let's go to the point. This Friday is my turn to introduce you a book. Well, here it's my recommendation: The Book thief by Markus Zusak. The first time I've heard about it was a year ago when in a summer english course, some pieces of the book were delivered to make an analysis of the writing style (...) It was after some months later, that I read it completely.
In some parts of the book, you could get bored but as a whole, in my opinion it is a masterpiece!

Before I detail you some weblinks, in order to get an idea of the book situation, let me copy the back cover from the edition I've got:

" 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier.
Liesel a nine year old girl, is living with a foster family on Himmel Street. Her parents have been taken away to a concentration camp. Liesel steals book. This is her story of the inhabitants of her street when the bombs begin to fall (...)"

Here, there is posted my search from you tube. There's no film// trailer (not yet, it's planning to next year), but some good summaries about the book that are uploaded on Internet by other readers (maybe, in class you could tell me which is more attractive from your point of view):

Video 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBGVnKWPMr4 (it's worth it with the volume up, great back music)
    Video 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ch0ZUmbDnU

    Video 3: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95s8GlKY40o

    To be continued...
    Thanks to read me;)
